Renegade Racers: Winner Anacona opens Movistar Team's 2019 win account

Winner Anacona opened Movistar Team’s 2019 win account in Argentina on Sunday, successfully defending the race lead thanks to intelligent riding from his team-mates who safely shepherded the Colombian through the final circuit based stage in San Juan.

Anacona (Movistar) won Friday’s mountain finish at Alto Colorado on Friday, outspringting Cesar Parades and Cristian Montoya (both Medellin) to take the the overall race lead from Julian Alaphilippe (Deceuninck-QuickStep). The victory is the Colombian’s all-rounders first win in a stage race and his first stage win since joining Movistar Team in 2015.

Winner Anacona:
We could not celebrate before the last finish line, and now that’s it’s over, I feel so happy as much as relieved I could finish it off. It’s my first stage race victory, and I hope it won’t be the last. It’s a magnificent way to confirm all preparations we did for this season were right – and claiming a victory in 2019 was also a hidden goal for me this season.

Challenge Mallorca
Alejandro Valverde emerged from his first outings of the season with three top 10 finishes during the five race Challenge Mallorca series in the road rider’s mecca in the Balearics. The World Champion endured winter conditions in the mountains in Saturday’s Trofeo Serra de Tramuntana, the most demanding race of the week, to take his first podium of the year in Deià.

Movistar Team’s European opener was sadly marred by a crash suffered by Mikel Landa in his very first day of 2019 racing, with the Basque caught up in a large crash with 19km remaining of the Trofeo Ses Salines-Campos-Porreres-Felanitx. Mikel is recuperating at home following surgery and is expected to be back in the saddle very soon.
